I would like to thank the officers and committee of the Northern New South Wales Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club for the fantastic opportunity given to me to come over to Australia and judge your Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

Also I would like to give special thanks to Jade and Megan Pratt and their family for the hospitality shown to me and my wife Tracy during our stay, they really made us feel like one of their own family. The barbeque they organised for my birthday is a memory that will stay with me forever, thank you.

We must remember that we are custodians of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and that the Breed Standard should be in our minds at all times when we are showing and with our breeding plans. So that in years to come we still have the Staffordshire Bull Terrier as it is today with its own uniqueness. This is especially important with the dangers of unscrupulous breeders and the dangers of breeds being banned and classed as dangerous dogs.

The show held on the 12th September 2010 at Hillsborough showground NSW, fantastic showground, the weather stayed good for us throughout the day. Thanks to the exhibitors for allowing me the opportunity to Judge their dogs. It is unbelievable the distance that the exhibitors travel to attend shows. I would like to congratulate them on their sportsmanship and behaviour shown in the ring on my decisions.

The following are some observations which may be of interest to some or at least cause some debate. The exhibitors above all seem to really love their dogs and are very enthusiastic about them. There seemed to be a willingness for exhibitors and spectators to improve their knowledge of the breed. The quantity and quality of the specials and prizes was unbelievable and put some UK clubs to shame. The hospitality shown to my wife and myself was first class and made the show even more memorable. Dogs were of a high standard and could easily compete overseas. There is a need however to be aware of some dogs being very overweight. I did see inverted canine teeth, and also some very tight canine’s digging into the outside of the gum. I did penalise some dogs for this as I believe that a good bite by a dog with correctly placed canines is very important fact for Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

Handling styles were variable with some handlers over handling the dogs while I was trying to view the profile of the dog, not enough of the exhibitors kept one eye on the judge when moving or stacking their dog to make sure they presented the dog at its best to the judge. Example being when moving to keep the dog on the side where the judge could view its top line, standing in front of the dog again when the judge wanted to see the front of the dog.

When moving the dogs some handlers had the lead so tight that the front legs were almost off the ground, which didn’t allow a free movement and showed no rear drive. Overuse of tit bits at times, on the move the dogs head was tilted and affected the shoulders and front movement also over use of the tit bits again whilst standing, lifts the dogs head extending the neck and spoilt the outline of the dog.

I hope these observation are of use to the exhibitors or at least make them think a little. Again I had a fantastic experience of judging at the show and would finally like to thank everyone involved for making it such a memorable day.
